The Losonczy lab used in vivo functional imaging of hippocampal microcircuits during associative learning tasks in mice dorsal hippocampus to identify and dissect the roles of identified hippocampal microcircuit elements – GABAergic interneuron subtypes and subcortical modulatory inputs – in learning-related plasticity and reorganization of hippocampal principal cells populations. I will discuss findings of how CA1 disinhibitory interneurons and catecholaminergic neuromodulation supports goal-directed spatial learning and related hippocampal place cell dynamics. Further, I will discuss how large-scale, unbiased imaging of hippocampal CA1 interneuron circuits and monosynaptically coupled interneuron-pyramidal cell subnetworks can provide insights into experience-dependent changes in hippocampal circuit dynamics. Finally, I will discuss hippocampal CA1 network dynamics supports aversive, temporal-associative learning.
